Must<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Must\u2019 is the basic and most direct way of saying something is compulsory. It means you have no choice but to do (or not do) an action. We can only use \u2018must\u2019 in the present form to describe a general or permanent obligation, or an obligation in the near future. The structure of \u2018must\u2019 is easy because it is the same for every subject:<\/p>\n

When you drive you must<\/span><\/strong> wear a seatbelt.<\/p>\n

They must<\/span><\/strong> hand in their projects before the 8th June.<\/p>\n

Have to<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In the affirmative form, \u2018have to\u2019 has the same meaning as \u2018must\u2019 and is used to express obligations. However, \u2018have to\u2019 is much more flexible than \u2018must\u2019 because we can use it in the past, the present and the future. For this reason it is very commonly used in modern English. Its structure is the same as any normal verb:<\/p>\n

We have to<\/span><\/strong> do the shopping because the cupboards are empty.<\/p>\n

She has to<\/span><\/strong> take two trains and a bus to get to work every day.<\/p>\n

The negative form of \u2018have to\u2019 has a very different meaning from \u2018mustn\u2019t\u2019. We use \u2018don\u2019t have to\u2019 to mean something is not necessary and that there is no obligation. For example:<\/p>\n

She doesn\u2019t have to<\/strong><\/span> come to the meeting if she doesn\u2019t want to.<\/p>\n

Must or Have to?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

So when do you use \u2018must\u2019 and when do you use \u2018have to\u2019? Generally speaking, in the present affirmative form you can use either \u2018must\u2019 or \u2018have to\u2019. However, there is a slight difference when we speak in the first person.<\/p>\n

When you want to describe an internal obligation<\/span> <\/strong>(an order you give yourself), it\u2019s better to use \u2018must\u2019. For example:<\/p>\n

These pants don\u2019t fit me anymore. I must<\/strong><\/span> lose weight.<\/p>\n

On the contrary, when you describe an external obligation<\/span><\/strong> (an order someone gives you) we use \u2018have to\u2019. For example:<\/p>\n

My doctor told me I\u2019m overweight and I have to<\/strong><\/span> go on a diet<\/p>\n

Instead when orders are general and official<\/span><\/strong>, for example on notices and documents, we usually use \u2018must\u2019. For example:<\/p>\n
